Beggars Can't Be Choosers

Image
When Perception Marks You as Destitute. When others see you as homeless, a beggar, or without rights, contempt and disrespect often follow. This is not mere cruelty but a deep feature of human nature: status hierarchies , the instinct to dominate the vulnerable, and the bias of dehumanization . People lower in perceived power trigger contempt because they no longer threaten the observer’s rank. Beggars cannot be choosers; those who feel superior know this and exploit it, making life hell in small, daily ways—refusing space, withholding courtesy, or inventing reasons to exclude—because they sense no consequence will follow. The same psychology operates in the workplace. When a boss or manager believes an employee has no other income or is unemployable elsewhere, ruthlessness appears. Demands escalate, credit is stolen, and the person is treated as replaceable almost like the orphan Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights , brought in as a rescued dog from the shelter, useful until he is ...

The Promise and the Price: What It Actually Takes to Farm in Africa Africa possesses some of the most fertile land on the planet and an abundance of young, driven talent eager to work it. The continent is practically bursting with individuals who have the grit to cultivate the earth and the vision to build agricultural empires. Yet, despite this overwhelming potential, the African business terrain remains a notoriously difficult one to break into. The agricultural sector contributes roughly 30% of Africa's GDP, yet it receives a staggering mere 6% of commercial bank lending. There is a gaping hole where institutional support should be, resulting in an annual agricultural financing gap estimated at over $100 billion. The talent is undeniably there, but the funding simply isn't reaching the actual farmers on the ground. Instead, those who are...

A Letter To The Late Jason Arday

Image
Dear Jason, I am writing this with a heavy heart to update you on the fallout since your tragic passing on August 14. What happened to you was fundamentally not right—no one should be subjected to the kind of relentless, racially motivated public shaming and harassment campaign that you endured. The situation with Nathan Cofnas and his sympathizers continues to be a disturbing spectacle. After leading the charge on the plagiarism accusations that pressured your resignation from Cambridge , Cofnas faced his own consequences—he was fired from his junior research fellowship at Cambridge and subsequently faced a teaching ban at Ghent University . Unsurprisingly, his sympathizers and anti-DEI campaigners are rallying behind him; the US ambassador to Belgium even publicly criticized his teaching ban. Cofnas continues to play the victim, claiming people are trying to have him thrown in jail simply for expressing his "race realist" ideas. It makes me wonder—what exactly did yo...
