The Naive Adult

Image
The human animal is fundamentally tribal. We are born with a deep, evolutionary mandate to seek out the warmth of the hearth, to find a community where we can belong, and to surround ourselves with people who will care for us when we are weak. This desire is so overwhelming that it frequently gives birth to a dangerous, comforting illusion: the assumption that others harbor the same good intentions toward us that we harbor toward them. But human beings are fiercely complex. Beneath the veneer of polite society, people are often driven by raw self-interest, quiet dishonesty, and calculated spite. Intentions are not etched onto foreheads nor written on the backs of palms. They are fiercely guarded in the darkest, most inaccessible vaults of the human heart, hidden away from the public gaze. To navigate the world unaware of this is to pay the devastating cost of naiveté. The naive individual operates much like Prince Myshkin in Dostoevsky’s The Idiot. Myshkin is undeniably good, but...

A Letter To The Late Jason Arday

Image
Dear Jason, I am writing this with a heavy heart to update you on the fallout since your tragic passing on August 14. What happened to you was fundamentally not right—no one should be subjected to the kind of relentless, racially motivated public shaming and harassment campaign that you endured. The situation with Nathan Cofnas and his sympathizers continues to be a disturbing spectacle. After leading the charge on the plagiarism accusations that pressured your resignation from Cambridge , Cofnas faced his own consequences—he was fired from his junior research fellowship at Cambridge and subsequently faced a teaching ban at Ghent University . Unsurprisingly, his sympathizers and anti-DEI campaigners are rallying behind him; the US ambassador to Belgium even publicly criticized his teaching ban. Cofnas continues to play the victim, claiming people are trying to have him thrown in jail simply for expressing his "race realist" ideas. It makes me wonder—what exactly did yo...

The Horseshoe Theory

Image
The horseshoe theory (sometimes called the horseshoe effect in political discourse) proposes that the political spectrum is not a straight line with the far-left and far-right at opposite poles. Instead, it curves like a horseshoe , so the extremes bend toward each other. The moderates and centrists sit at the open curve, while the tips—representing authoritarian or extremist tendencies—come closer together than either does to the center. Proponents argue that both far-left and far-right ideologies often share traits like intolerance of dissent, a willingness to use state power or violence for ideological purity, cult-like leadership, suppression of free speech, and a binary “us vs. them” worldview, even if their stated goals (class equality vs. national/racial purity) differ sharply. The idea has roots in observations from the 20th century, with the metaphor appearing in Weimar Republic discussions around groups like the Black Front. French philosopher Jean-Pierre Faye popul...

What Are Stable-Coins ?

Image
The Dawn of Digital Stability In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency, where volatility often reigns supreme, stablecoins emerge as the anchors of calm in a stormy sea. But what exactly are stablecoins? At their core, stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value, typically pegged to a fiat currency like the US dollar, a commodity such as gold, or even a basket of assets. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which can swing wildly in price due to market speculation, supply dynamics, and global events, stablecoins aim for predictability. This stability makes them ideal for everyday transactions, remittances, and as a bridge between traditional finance ( TradFi ) and decentralized finance ( DeFi ). To understand stablecoins, let's break it down. The first major stablecoin, Tether (USDT), launched in 2014 by Tether Limited , promised a 1:1 peg to the US dollar. For every USDT in circulation, there was supposedly a dollar held in reserve. This concept quic...

What Is A.L.I.C.E. ?

Image
In an era of global interconnectedness, economic fragility in one nation can ripple across borders, influencing everything from trade policies to international alliances. The United States, long viewed as the pinnacle of prosperity, is increasingly scrutinized for its internal vulnerabilities. A concept dubbed the "American Kill Line," originating from Chinese online discussions, has gone viral, highlighting how precarious life can be for millions of Americans. This metaphor draws from video gaming, where crossing a "kill line" means instant defeat, and applies it to societal collapse triggered by financial setbacks. Tied closely to this is the ALICE metric , a data-driven measure of working households teetering on the edge of survival. Together, these concepts reveal deep-seated inequalities in the U.S. that not only endanger its citizens but pose risks to global stability. What is the ALICE Metric? The ALICE metric, developed by United Way , stands for Asset Limi...

Who is John Pilger?

Image
The Relentless Voice Against Empire – Lessons for the US-Venezuela Crisis and a Warning for the World In an era where journalism often bends to the whims of power, John Pilger stood as a defiant outlier—a thorn in the side of imperialism, as one tribute aptly described him. Born in Australia in 1939 and based in the UK for much of his career, Pilger was a filmmaker, author, and investigative journalist whose work exposed the hypocrisies of Western foreign policy. His documentaries and books peeled back the layers of propaganda surrounding wars, economic exploitation, and the subtle machinations of global dominance. Pilger passed away in December 2023, but his insights feel eerily prescient amid the escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Venezuela in early 2026. As US forces launch strikes on Caracas and capture President Nicolás Maduro, Pilger's critiques of "modern era imperialism" as a "war on democracy" resonate louder than ever. Jo...
