How Can I Stop Being Mediocre ?
We know we deserve better and that’s why we strive for better. We don’t always necessarily get to our satisfied place mentally, we fallout, fall back, and give up and embrace mediocrity.
Growing up my dad would tell me stories of the first member of our family to make it big. King Kaku Ackah. A nation builder and leader in the 17 and 18 century. He fought long against the Portuguese, Dutch only loosing to the deception of the English. His family scattered and struggled to find the past glory and nation building skills again.
When I was in middle class foster care I was surrounded with comfort luxury and a seemingly easy life. Tryouts for the regional juvenile team in serie A at 9 was quite an achievement. My dads incapacity to reconcile with his failure and submission to Christianity made him jealous .The task to be great had stumbled on me and so he did what every narcissist does best: he destroyed everything; himself, me, and his family.
What has all this got to do with mediocrity. Stay with me here I’m about to break it down.
In 2004 Greece won the Euro cup tournament. A seemingly insignificant country, football wise, but with a great culture and history. Greece was the underdog during the whole tournament. Otto Rehhagel who knows a thing or two about football coached the Greek team from 2001 to 2010. His strategy was the famous Italian “catenaccio” basically everybody does everybody’s role. There are no stars, aces and number 9’s. Everyone is on the same playing field.
Mediocrity only hunts those who have a destiny to be great, it’s almost like the earth sends this your way to make up for all the glory you absorbed in the past or that you will absorb in the future.
What mediocrity reminds you is that: you know you’re better than this, you deserve to be running great things like the series “Successions”, but you’re stuck in that mediocre job, in that mediocre house, in that mediocre relationship, in that mediocre friendship surrounded by people who cheat, steal, manipulate, bully and frustrate the weak, who are in the position to make decisions but only think about booking holidays or buying their next car.
Mediocrity allows you to see all this in the dead of night; because it knows you better than everyone else.
and so how do we get unstuck?
Conquer your fear of being seen!
“The fear of being seen paralyses, exposing vulnerabilities. Mediocrity, the feared outcome, looms. It's the dread of being judged, found wanting, and blending into the unremarkable. This anxiety stifles potential, keeping us hidden, yet yearning for recognition, however precarious.”
We have to stop living in the past, in the shadow of a glory that couldn’t be contained and consolidated. It only hurts us more when we are reminded of these big dreams, but show up to mediocre jobs and spaces.
What we need to do is embrace humility. For the gods give pride to those they want to destroy.
That’s easier said than done. Why? Because mediocrity sends its most loyal activists: the haters! These are predators searching for you and I. Non player characters designed and forged to hunt us and destroy us. When I say they are everywhere, they are EVERYWHERE ! You will manage 2- 10 a year at least !
This is where it gets crazy. They believe it’s their right to hunt you down, skin you alive and crucify you. But this is where you will know if you’re bound to be mediocre or you’re being humble and the dog in you is waiting to be unleashed. You know this by confronting them. Playing at their game. That’s where it gets confusing to mediocrity. It almost had you. You were supposed to give up and turn out to be schizophrenic. But your comeback and your versatility, the same quality every Greek player assumed in the Euros 2004, shows what you’re really made off. To then claim your rightful place you need to to do it all: the sales negotiator, the executive business salesman, the property developer, the delivery driver, the cleaner, the chef, the father, the husband, the business media tycoon, the franchisor and lastly but not least the crypto enthusiast. They all play a pivotal role in whether you stay mediocre or rise to the ranks and rightful place.
You my friend have signed up to a slow and steady ascension next to the gods on mount Olympus where you will be welcomed. But the way there is meant to be awful, tedious, suffocating, nauseating, and lined up with discouragement from those you least expect. Not because they’re humans, and humans make mistakes, but because you thought proximity made you safe to their programming, their jealousy, their envy and gossip.
There is more to unpack: egregores, pendulums, thought forms and group think and last but not least the algorithm.
But so far this will suffice!
Embrace everything because your task requires it.
